Abstract:

Active and retired landfills in Montana, listed in the Montana Department of Environmental Quality - Solid Waste Management Program archives. Attributes associated with the point data describe landfill status, regulatory class, and location.

Purpose:

To illustrate distribution and location of landfills across Montana. Active landfill locations can sorted from the complete dataset for planning purposes.

Attribute accuracy report:

All attributes are current with MDEQ-SWP landfill site archives. Open landfills locations were verified manually from 1:24,000 USGS quad maps by Pat Crowley.

Logical consistency report:

Township, Range, and Section values were individually verified as correct, and consistent with the archives.

Completeness report:

Dataset is complete, as of the publication date. The MDEQ- SWP archives should be reviewed annually, and this coverage updated accordingly.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:

Approximate horizontal accuracy is 12 meters, assuming source data meets National Map Accuracy Standards. Coordinates for open landfills were assigned from 1:24,000 USGS quad maps and field visits by Pat Crowley. Retired landfill location coordinates were derived from conversion of their legal location descriptions, using an algorithm available at the MDEQ- Water Quality Division for locating water quality sample sites. Contact Don Mittelstaedt for algorithm details. Locations of the retired landfills are approximate and may be reviewed in historical context.

Process step:

Open landfill locations were found on USGS quads by Crowley. Latitude/Longitude for each site was hand calculated using the Minnesota template over 7.5 minute USGS quads, and converted to decimal degree geographic coordinates.

Township, Range, Section, Quarter-quarter Section locations of retired landfills were taken from tabular database, and provided to Don Mittelstaedt, DEQ, for conversion to lat/long. Geographic coordinates calculated from lat/longs.

Attributes, including calculated geographic coordinates were provided to NRIS in QuatroPro database format. Dataset of open and closed landfill sites was converted to DBase format and uploaded to ArcInfo.
